Day 13: Former Street Boys & Custom-Made Clothing

Today we visited the Watoto Foundation (Watoto means "children") which is a NGO that helps street boys get off the streets, leave behind crime, stop substance-abusing, get an education, learn a trade, find a job, get an apartment, and start their lives. It is truly amazing and their campus is stunning. The compound consists of a wood-work shop, an auto shop, a furniture gallery, a common meeting area with foozball tables and pool tables, an office for the staff, a large garden where they grow all sorts of veggies/starches/etc, 3 chicken houses (one for the chicks, one for egg chickens, and one for meat chickens), a large pig house, a goat house, a cow barn, a soccer field, a volleyball court, a cheese room where they produce large wheels of gouda cheese, dormitories for the boys, and a rabbit house which also houses two guinea pigs (the rabbits and guinea pigs are really just pets for the boys). They  also provide the boys with rehabilitation, counseling, medical care, clothing, etc. They send them all through primary school and those who wish to go higher will be sponsored to do so. Others will be taught a trade and helped to find a job. Some who've graduated work in the Watoto Foundation's lodge where people can stay in a luxurious African hotel similar to the one we stayed in on safari. All of the lodge's profits go back into the main campus and the boys. Those boys also gave us individual tours of the campus and asked us lots of questions as they showed us around. It was really nice :D

After the tour, Amber and I were dropped off near Tengeru where Baba picked us up and took us to the dress-maker. She was so charismatic and friendly! I loved her! She high fived us any time we got a swahili phrase correctly and let us pick from a bunch of designs. I brought two large fabric swatches which she is going to make into dresses designed specifically to fit my measurements. It's so exciting, and WAY more afordable than in the US. I can't wait to pick them up on Saturday after I get back from our trip to Zanzibar and Dar Es Salaam!

It all looks so fun. When do you come home? It feels like you've been gone forever. I love you.
